Mel had a vision.   It took 18 months to complete

Start with an old river red gum slab from Mal....... with a fault

You need a hammer and a chisel, lots of time and dedication..... and a dog

Then work for a year or so.

Add some fish

Then a river

That's marvellous work

HEAD'S UP. ANNUAL TIMBER AUCTION 20 SEPTEMBER 2015. Great bargains

Boutique Timbers will hold its annual timber auction at 10.00am on 20 September 2015 at the Rollands Plains Recreation Ground on Rollands Plains Road, (20kms off the Pacific Highway, turn at Telegraph Point).
Inspection 19 Sep or the morning of the sale.

Preparation is underway, there will be several vendors as well as ourselves.
Over 400 lots, with around 100 of these slabs, the rest boards, coffee tables pieces, burls, burl slices, flitches, decking, hobby lots, turning blanks,wedding slices and squares.

Timbers will include large quantity of Australian Red Cedar and other furniture timbers such as blackwood, Queensland maple, Mackay cedar, NG rosewood, Australian rosewood, snakewood, callophyllum, jarrah, and heaps of camphor laurel: table slabs, benchtops, coffee tables, boards, and boards suitable for resaw for cutting, display and cheese boards in thicknesses of 25mm, 35mm, 40mm and 50mm.
There will be 40-50mm hardwood boards, slabs and flitches and hobby packs of hairy oak, huon pine, white cedar and camphor.

The auction will also financially assist the Ground Committee: full camping facilities are available for the weekend and they will be offering food and drinks for sale.

More information will be provided in the coming weeks and the lot list will be available around 10th September.

Calophyllum. a great general purpose timber. Tables and Bench seats by NKA Creative designs

At the forthcoming 'GIANT' timber auction at Rollands Plains Recreation Ground on 20 September 2015, one of the timbers we will have for sale is Calophyllum.

It is a North Queensland timber, not well know in NSW though I have noted slabs for sale on ebay at quite high prices.


The pictures show 50mm thick RS Calophyllum (provided by Boutique Timbers to Craig at NKA Creative Designs), that has been processed to produce wonderful tables and matching bench seats.

The timber is medium density, (approx 640kg/m3), there are 4 species in Queensland and it is a common tropical timber worldwide with over 100 different species.
It is easy to work, and saws and thicknesses easily, though backsawn boards may show signs of fiddleback.
It is used for furniture, mouldings, joinery panelling, boat building, ribs, masts, oars and canoes.

We will have available 50mm and 75mm boards from 150-240mm wide in the auction. (We have found it readily easy to split the the 75mm boards to provide 35mm thick boards)

AUCTION 20 September 2015. 'Hobby' packs

We are planning around 400 lots for the auction.

However not everyone wants 100 lineal metres of Queenland maple or a dozen red cedar boards, so following on from the success of 'hobby packs' last year, there will be available quite a few lots for those who make boxes or small items.

There will also be burls and pen blanks for sale on the day and some boxes of turning blanks in the auction.

Flame Mackay Cedar. There will be 4 or 5 flame Mackay cedar boards sold as individual lots.


There will be several of red cedar crutch panels or box making boards, 20 and 25mm thick

There will be a range of western NSW timbers for auction, Mal took a trip out past Tamworth last weekend to gather a load for the auction. More with photos next week

Cooktown Ironwood and Auction day photos

Cooktown ironwood is a very hard dense timber, used for musical instruments, furniture, knife and other handles and general pupose furniture where dense timber is required.

It hails from far North Qld. We have boards available from 250-400mm wide x 50mm thick.

AUCTION DAY PHOTOS.
It was a great success, over 95% sold.
The day is also a major fund raiser for the Rollands Plains Recreation Ground Trust who are carrying our renovations and adding an new all-steel campdraft arena and new stock handing facilities.

Kempsey Stock and Land provided the auctioneers for the day (for the third year in a row) as a generous donation to the Recreation Ground Committee.

Each year, Boutique Timbers pays a percentage of the sale proceeds to the Trust and this year the donation will be around $4000; which with sales generated from food sales and cakes donated  by local community members, will make around a $5000 contribution to the Trust coffers

Several years ago, we posted a video showing a Mark Holt's house and surroundings in Rollands Plains. (Check it out if you haven't looked)

At the recent auction, Mark bought the 'Giant' red cedar slab.
The following photos show construction and the finished table and his kitchen.

I shake my head is disbelief, having no design capacity or artistic ability myself.








There are still 5 of these 'giant' slabs left, enough for the next few auctions

This is how we want the slabs to come out


Sometimes, they come like this. One man's feature? or another man's rot. Pity, but that's timber


This will be a good slab, it is wet at the moment but will dry light yellow


Picked up some dark red cedar from up the Hastings valley. It looked woolly, but it dresses as some the best cedar I've seen for a while; dark brown with great grain

Sassafrass. Also got some good 4m x 200mm x 25mm light coloured timber that thicknessed to beautiful clean boards and some u70mm x 70mm squares

Another year almost over; are we wiser or just older or more confused?
Thanks for your support and we look forward to seeing you next year at either the Sydney wood show in June, the Auction at Rollands Plains Showground in September or at anytime up here on the farm.


Some good timber processed in the past weeks.

Wide.... ish... camphor 700-1metre wide x 50mm x 2.0-3.0m long.
But like all camphors, 1 metre at one end and 1 metre at the other doesn't always mean that the centre follows. Often they thin down to 700-800mm. But there are some nice future tables in these stacks



Kauri Pine (ex Sydney tree), boards to 500mm x 50mm x 2.5-4m, some 75 and 100mm thick slabs and a few nails as well......  that's Sydney trees


Truck load of stock. These nicely stickered boards are forest oak.
The flitches to the back are Pigeonberry ash

High gloss straight edged camphor table 2.5m x 1.05m with stump legs

Dale from Hunter Cleaning Equipment has been busy.
He started with a wild camphor slab, squared the edges and added Tas Oak edges tidy the table edges.
Finished with feast and Watson clean varnish, 2 coats brushed then another 5 sprayed with block sanding between coats.
The stump legs were all bored to leave an outside wall 100mm thickness and the whole table was supported by a 50x25mm Rhs frame from underneath.
Neat and very pretty.

African Mahogany roll top box and Qld maple/Hornbeam guitar

Paul has been busy and remains so.

Last week he visited and took some sassafras, red cedar, rosewood, northern silver ash, black bean and forest oak for more boxes and guitars.

The roll top box is all African Mahogany, very striated with the drawer of pacific maple for colour differentiation.

The guitar body and the fret markers and truss rod cover is Queensland Maple with Hornbeam fretboard, the back of the body is African mahogany which was laminated and glued.
He is very proud father of this guitar and is now planning a Spanish guitar as his next project.

Camphor slab tables are one of our most popular items.

Legs can either be metal, square 100x100 or whatever with rails or 700-800mm high slabs, rusticated style with a connecting rail across the bottom to stabilize the table.

Allan has a great design, cut out rusticated legs with a pinned rail.

A beautiful colourful table finished with feastwatson wipe on poly.
