Big Old Australian Rd Cedar. RIP

This poor old fella was 140 years old, and died of natural causes.
It's butt is 1.25m wide and the butt length is over 3 metres. There will be some rather nice slabs ready around the end of the year, anyone wanting to put their name down for one let us know.

Ray Ward's hiab lifted the large butt piece with ease.

Milling the big red cedar

The trunk was oval in shape, 1.25m wide one way and 1.2m wide the other.
There was a large 'bump' on one side, that normally indicated an old branch and hence often rot.
Placing the bump at the top to remove it first, we had log ready to mill that would provide 3.3m long x 1.2m wide slabs with parallel sides


 It was a tree near a house and there were a few nails, you see the discolouration



Had to cut off the top to fit into the mill



Cut perfectly




The bump was of no issue, clean wood that left a feature mark on some slabs

The big old red cedar provided quite a few small branch cuts as well as the large butt and the following shots show how they ended.

This shows the timber colour and some 15mm panelling sawn from one branch. Drying well, these will be OK for sale later this year, but the thicker slabs need longer to dry.


These are some 900mm-1m wide camphor and bluegum slabs ready to be taken down for drying

Brisbane Wood Show 2016

27-29 May.
The Brisbane wood show will exhibit and have for sale timber, woodworking tools and equipment and much more at the RNA Showground in several weeks time.
Mal hasn't been able to attend for three years due to various incapacities (broken and new hip, bowel cancer, standard old man stuff.....)

But he's back again and hopes to rekindle old friendships.

Blackbutt and Tallowood logs

Previous loggers had left a big blackbutt with a fire damaged base and a few other trees that were causing problems with hay making in the paddock.
Four Tallowood logs up to a meter wide and 16 blackbutt logs the same width and up to 6 metres long were cut from the trees, and a few nice forest oaks made for a good mornings work.

We will be there with a large array of timber including plenty of exotics as well as the old standards red cedar, rosewood, camphor and blackwood.

Getting ready to take the stock to the Rollands Plains Recreation Ground Wednesday.
They have removed the old timber fence that enclosed the old rodeo ground but have replaced it with a nice new steel fence further up the hillside for us to display the slabs.
