Auction Summary and some magnificent work

The auction day was fine. Over 350 lots were offered and around 85% sold with total sales up over 20% over last year's auction
Best deals were had with boards, many 50mm boards  of Queensland timbers selling for around $500/cubic metre equivalent.

Good quality Australian red cedar sold well as did silky oak and Mackay cedar with snakewood sought after, although it's sister timber callophyllum was not so popular.

Burls were sought after but there as there were many slabs offered, there were some good bargains to be had, among these, perhaps the best being 4.5 metres long 900mm wide Hoop Pine slabs for around $200 and a 3 metre long rosewood slab for $150.

Hobby packs and lots with small numbers of boards were popular as they allowed small users to get what they needed rather than buy 'half a cube' of timber. We will have more small lots next year.

The numbering system was a mess, so we will sort this and that will assist the documentation recording and payment process as well. We will also ask purchasers of large quantities to wait until the end so we can process smaller lot buyers more efficiently next year as this was difficult. But we ask patience, we are amateurs at this and run it oursleves.

Someone asked whether we would hold these twice a year as the demand was good and the day worked well....... I don't think so...... was Mal's reply.

So we'll do it all again in September next year. Hope to see you all there again.

Some magnificent artisan works.

I am sure there are camphorlaurel trees somewhere in Europe, but I have just spent several weeks travelling from Prague up and down the Danube and Rhine and from Amsterdam to Paris.....
And unlike in Japan, saw not a single one!

Saw some trees however, some beautiful doors and carvings and lots and lots of Oak used everywhere.

Large Horse Chestnut in Prague

Quartersawn Oak carved church pews in Budapest

Cobblestones were noisy with carriages, so timber was used to keep the noise down close to palaces

Parquetry flooring was common in monasteries and palaces

Re-usable coffin.......

Beautiful doors Melk monastery

Nice line of cedars at Salzburg or somewhere......

Timber carving at somewhere.....(.... after a while all towns merge)

Finally..... a use for pine

ARC Australian Red Cedar

$

Time was, the main timber used inside Australian homes and for fine furniture was Australian red cedar. Early cedar cutters helped open the the east coast of Australia to settlement by working their way north through the scrubs and river valleys from Sydney. Bullocks and horses were used to drag the cedars logs to the rivers and floods were used to carry them to ports along the coast.
And cedars were huge.

In the 1900s, a second wave of cedar cutters using trucks and bulldozers led by the indominable Bill Hayden saw red cedar again popular in post war building construction. And the cedars were huge.

Cedars are fast growing and have regenerated along the coastal regions, stock is available from auctions and from backyards and clearing. Not so huge....., but still beautiful timber.

Stock is also available from the sheds of old timers, many farmers over the past 100 years have had trees logged and sawn into boards and stored. Boards are not attacked by white ants and kept dry, they will last and last and last.

Mal has just recently obtained a truckload of cedar boards and old cedar house panels (painted green) that have been in storage for decades. old dark timber ready for work. And a few truckloads of logs as well, backyards on the north coast often have cedars planted as garden trees.... until they grew to be 'huge'.
Check out the cedar trees in the streets of Kempsey; less than 30 years old and already 20 metres tall and 600mm through.

Boutique Timbers will be exhibiting  at Kiama in March and at the Sydney working with wood show in June or July......possibly Brisbane as well depending on Mal's health.
The annual Timber auction at Rollands Plains Recreation Reserve is planned for September, date to be advised.

Plus we welcome visitors 7 days a week at the farm and again are delivering to Sydney: large orders by truck and small orders can be collected from Greg's place at Cremorne just over the Bridge.

The year has started with logs and some high quality timber from Lazarides auction in Brisbane.

We look forward to discussing your needs and supplying specialty furniture and hobby timbers again this year.

Bago Winery and some great use of Camphor

Camphor can be spectacular in the right hands.
'Hands' have created a magnificent kitchen bench.

Bago Vineyards near Wauchope and Port Macquarie is owned by the Mobbs family.
Beautiful setting, great wines, with a maze feature that attracts tourists from all over Australia.

The photo shows several family members including Jim Mobbs and Val Ward (our uncle and mother). Both celebrated their 91st birthday last year.

It also shows some great use of timber......bloodwood is an underrated timber.....
This long table is made from 3 boards of 40mm bloodwood. The bar behind the group is made from rough sawn bloodwood with a rosewood top.

Worth a visit to the winery to see the way Jim and Jamie have used timber throughout the winery

Camphor benchtop.... great hands

There's no camphors in Mexico City either

Australian exports currently may be all iron or or coal, but in the past we exported seeds and have they been successful.....too successful in some areas, ask the Californians with their wild fires
All across the globe, you will find eucalypts, with blue gum a particular favorite.

Mexico city central was build on the lake that once was the centre of the Axtec empire.
After conquest, the Spaniards drained it and build some wonderful buildings in its centre, including some churches that have now have 10 degree leans as they were build on mud.

Euclypts are common in the city and there is a blue gum forest that surrounds that part of the old lake that survives, with around 180km of waterways still in existence.
What is surprising is the number of river oaks and silky oaks that are common around the waterways with the river oaks planted to stablise the embankments.

But not a camphor in sight!

Unknown tree, common in Mexico city streets.

Secrets The Vine is a magnificent hotel in Cancun.

No children and all inclusive with plenty of activities, sort of like a cruise without the seasickness.

It uses timber  and glass throughout and and I can recommend its showers as the best I've seen anywhere, double showers enclosed in glass around 4m x 2m x 3m high.

Back to timber in the hotel

Slab Table. 5 m long x over 1 metre wide x 100m thick.
Central cracks but the faults are made into a wonderful feature with the use of bow-tie butterfly connections. The legs consist of 2 slabs 100mm thick x 800mm wide, inset into the top slab in a routed  recess and bolted into place.

Spanish Cedar (Cedrela Odorata) in the Galapagos Islands

Spanish Cedar was introduced as a timber tree sometime in the 1900s by Norwegian settlers.
It has become and invasive species as its seeds are readily disbursed by wind, nevertheless it is useful on the islands as there are few native trees of timber quality.

Galapagos is Spanish for 'tortoise' and in the moist warm highlands of Santa Cruz Island, Cedar trees and giant tortoises are quite common

Good sized cedar. The bump at the base of the tree is a tortoise

Ummm.... this is not a cedar. Much of the Galapagos is volcanic and desert like, these are cacti that are common  and the only 'trees' on some of the sea level areas.

Kiama is one of the most beautiful areas in NSW. It contains "Kiama' itself, a hilly coastal town with a secure boat harbour; it has a volcanic history that has left a noisy basaltic blowhole, rich soils and  a rainforest hinterland with conspicuous red cedar trees.

Each March the local Kiama Woodworking Group holds an exhibition of their work and Boutique Timbers offers its timber products for sale.

Slabs, boards, burls and burl slices, blocks, squares, turning blocks, pen blanks and veneer.

BRAXTON's FINE WORK

Red Mallee burl as a top feature

Rosewood timber provided by Boutique Timbers was used to produce a spectacular piece of fine furniture for his HSC final work. The handles were ebonised red gum, Bird's eye Huon Pine was used for the doors, Canadian Rock Maple for background for the marquetry, Blackheart Sassafras for the leaf stem with Brazilian Mahogany for the leaves and Huon pine for the drawers

ROBERT JOLLIFFE's CHAIR II

The chairs are made as gifts to his daughter in laws on the birth of a grandchild.
Chair I was made from Flooded Gum, this one from back sawn and quarter sawn Queensland Maple. Finished with Tung Oil
He will soon be working on Chair III. Timber this time? TBA
Wonderful heirlooms

CUBA........Not a camphor laurel anywhere

Cuba is a mess.
If are a left leaning voter and you want to see what 50 years of socialism can do to a country. Visit Cuba.
Che Guevara and Fidel have become 'brands' on t-shirts. Fidel is still alive living in his mansion, but the post-revolution government is a joke
Ration stamps are still is use.
Food rations are used.
Everything is owned by the state and as there is no pride in ownership. There has been no infrastructure development of consequence, no building maintenance (shades of our Housing Commission.....), no small business growth to generate personal wealth.
It's a mess, but very interesting for week's visit.
Get there before Macdonalds arrive.

But the people are very pleasant, the beer is good and the lobsters are cheap.....it reminds me of my childhood in the 1950s.

So called 'Flame Tree in Havana

1950 Chevrolets and old cars are everywhere used as taxis. These are privately owned now. Newer taxis are all government owned yellow Hyundais.

There are some trees of note, but no camphors

In the 'Museum of Revolution' in the old Presidential Mansion (complete with bullet holes) this old beautiful mahogany table, used both by Presidents and Casto remains intact.

This shows part of old Havana, it is typical of the old town, with habited derelict remains of 300 year old Spanish buildings. Yes, some are under renovation, often in joint ventures with overseas Hotels but some have totally crumbled.

Eucalypts have reached Cuba. And if you look closely, you will a white ants nest as well!

Timber workshop in old Havana..... (then again there are 50 year old workshops in Sydney that look like this........)

Business success! Tobacco leaves designed for cigars. The Government 'buys' 80% of the crop and the farmers can sell 20%

Bromeliads all over trees in Vinales

Was told this is a 'good timber' tree. Not sure of its variety, but it has similar bark to red cedar and mahoganies

:Good sized tree full of bromeliads in Vinales

Horse riding in Vinales, limestone region with perfect soils for tobacco growing

This was a beautiful home in Havana. It is owned by the Government (as they all are), has several families living in it and has had no maintenance since the revolution

This is a celebration of something or other. Revolutionary socialists can build this sort of rubbish but can't manage an economy

This farm held tourist dinners to generate income. Yes, I know the are farms in Australia that have chickens and pigs, not many have tobacco though

Shot showing the beauty of old Havana
